Bonded for life.

When any of us choose to become a vet do we really understand that we are choosing a way of life rather than a profession?

As I watched the other rowers push off from the launch and head off without me yesterday the disappointment was enough to knock me momentarily off balance and I felt like I was thirteen years old again, having not been picked for the netball team.

The reality is that because of the job I do I cannot be available to train every weekend and I am on call on the day of a big race.  Therefore I have been dropped from the boat.

'Maybe you can get your own boat out with someone else.' They suggest.

The reality is that in this life everyone is out to look after number one.

I must accept that I am not like other people, that my 'work life' balance will always be more 'work' than 'life' and that very few will understand or even care.

People often wonder why vets are such a close knit bunch and why the bonds we form with our college friends become bonds for life.

It is for this precise reason.

You may think that you have integrated yourself into the community and you may pride yourself on a wide circle of friends but no-one will ever better understand the hardships that life will throw at you more so than your vet friends.  While you may not see them very often, they will always be there for you and you should never underestimate the important role they will play in your life, long, long after the day of graduation.

Getting left out of things because of work schedules happens to nurses and doctors too and anyone who work shift work..
In my former life as a nurse the same sorts of things happened to me as well.. It sucks no doubt about it.. But it also sucks that people with "normal" schedules cannot make more of an attempt to bend for us..
But I totally agree that the friends you make with in your profession are very important.

Life works that way for cops, firefighters/EMTs, and chefs too.

My Vet is the best and I hope he realizes that. I think your right, probably Vets understand Vets the best!
Have a great day!

I can empathise - I've always been into team sports (soccer, softball etc) but working every 2nd weekend & being on call so often means I can't commit to anything with a fixed schedule. So now I go to the gym & I loathe it, but it is nice to see people other than clients & those with whom I work. Good luck in finding something that suits your schedule!

You are all right there are many others like me and I should stop feeling sorry for myself. It's hardly as if the boat is competing for the olympics, to be quite honest they will be lucky if they don't come last!
